Hence, we have taken to calling hip hop music of the 1980’s and 1990’s “old school rap.”  When you watch music videos for instance you can tell the times are changing.  Songs such as “It’s like that” by Run DMC simply don’t have the same message as “U Ain’t Goin Nowhere” by Young Buck.  The difference is of course in the lyrics and the “keeping it real” attitude.  Thirty years ago the world was a much different place, and we certainly didn’t have the ability to speak the truths as we see in today’s society. 

Today, the hip hop community and hip hop music in general is more geared to the younger generation of hip hop artists then they are towards the older, more established artists.  You can see it in all of the free hip hop and R&B videos you see on different websites and on music channels on your television.  Even the free R&B videos show something completely different then what the older views would really relate to.  That being said though, it isn’t so much of a surprise that older generations simply can’t relate to what is being played on free hip hop videos.  Thirty years ago, we couldn’t understand why our parents were listening to their kind of music.  The younger generation is taking over, and there isn’t anything we can do about it.  For now, we’ll take our “old school rap” and enjoy it for what it was – modern day music.
